Drupal 8.8.0 — the last normal feature release of Drupal 8 — is now available for download. Some of the updates in this release include:
Stable Media Library:
The media library allows reuse of images, documents, videos and other digital assets across the website. The media library was previously a beta experimental module.
Media Library, experimental since Drupal 8.6.0, is a stable core module in Drupal 8.8.0. It does three main things:
- Enhances the administrative media list page with a visual grid display of media thumbnails.
- Allows users to select media for use in a field, or in a text editor, via a gorgeous, intuitive modal UI.
- Enables authors to embed media items into text content, via the aforementioned gorgeous UI.
Experimental Administration Theme:
Drupal’s admin UI (the Seven theme) feels outdated and needs a visual update. The current designs were created for Drupal 7 in 2008-2009 and were slightly updated for Drupal 8. At the time, many of the current Drupal’s features and components didn’t exist and Seven’s UX was not taking them into account.
This has been raised by agency leaders as one of the key issues preventing them from selling Drupal. A Drupal admin UI UX study that was done in 2018 also validated the need for a more modern admin UI.

A new experimental theme called Claro has been added to Drupal core. It includes better touch support and accessibility.
Claro was validated in contrib and has thousands of sites using it, and several Drupal distributions have already adopted it. Claro has been implemented using the new Drupal Design System.
Workspaces Improvements:
Workspaces can now work with Content Moderation, and it’s now possible to define hierarchical workspaces.
Native Composer Support:
Composer has been included with Drupal for the first time. Now users can create new sites with a one-line command without reliance on third-party projects.
Changes to browser support
Websites can only work well with modern browsers that support CSS and JavaScript. Some browsers are getting outdated. So the new Drupal 8.8 is changing the browser support policy.
It supports the latest release of the two latest supported major versions of these desktop and mobile browsers:
- Firefox
- Google Chrome
- Opera
- Safari
- Microsoft Edge
- Safari for iOS
As well as the latest supported release of the latest major version of these desktop and mobile browsers:
- DFirefox ESR
- Internet Explorer
- Chrome for iOS
- Chrome for Android
- Samsung Internet
- UC Browser
- Opera Mini
